Indian summer for Mowbray

- Mike Whalley

TONY MOWBRAY has called on Blackburn’s Indian owners to show their support by backing him in the Championship next season.

Rovers were promoted from League One on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory at Doncaster.

Manager Mowbray has had to rebuild his squad as Blackburn have looked to recover from financial turmoil, with debts having risen to £100million since they were relegated from the top flight six years ago. Club owners Venky’s are unpopular with fans for the way they have managed the club – which was placed under a year-long transfer embargo in 2014 after breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

Mowbray will travel to India in the next few weeks to meet the owners and outline his plans for next season. He believes they can copy the example of Sheffield United and Millwall by following a promotion with a push for the Championship’s top six – if he gets a bit of money to spend.

He said: “I was working out up to 12 Championship clubs could get parachute payments, including the three coming down.

“And although it’s not a time to talk about budgets, it is for me because I want to compete like Sheffield United and Millwall. The Championship will be tough. If Southampton, Stoke and West Brom go down, their budgets will be £60million-£70m.

“We have to give ourselves a chance and that’s what I’ll discuss with the owners.”

Mowbray has worked smartly in the market, signing the likes of Bradley Dack, who has hit 18 goals from midfield since his arrival and was voted League One Player of the Year.
