Boateng Russia hopes in balance

-

BAYERN MUNICH’S Jerome Boateng looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering an adductor muscle injury against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The Germany defender was substituted during the 2-1 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at the Allianz Arena and now faces a battle to be fit for the World Cup.

“Life is full of setbacks,” Boateng tweeted. “Now it’s all about fighting to be there in Russia.

“For the remaining games I will support my team as much as I can.”

All three of Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes’ substitutions were forced by injuries, with Dutch winger Arjen Robben, who went down five minutes into the match, diagnosed with a thigh muscle problem. Javi Martinez picked up a minor head injury and the Spaniard will miss a couple of days of training.

Bayern dominated early on and took the lead through Joshua Kimmich but Marcelo equalised just before half-time and substitute Marco Asensio scored the winner after Rafinha gave away the ball.

“We defended very well and then we killed them on a counter,” said Real captain Sergio Ramos. “We need to remember nights like this and learn because that’s what makes this team great.”

Bayern have been charged by UEFA over a pitch invasion and displaying an offensive banner during the match. A number of fans came on to the field and tried to approach players, including Bayern’s Franck Ribery and Real’s Germany playmaker Toni Kroos.

Two fans attempted to take a photograph with Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo before being chased away by stewards. The Portuguese was unmoved by the incident and video footage showed him grinning.

The case will be heard on May 31.
