Fury at ‘soft’ sentence for driver who killed boys

-

A SERIAL crook high on cocaine who killed two young brothers in a hit and run was yesterday jailed for just nine years.

The devastated parents of six-year-old Corey Platt-May and his two-year-old brother Casper last night called on the Government for legislation to ensure killer drivers face tougher punishment.

In a victim statement their mother Louise Platt-May, 28, told Warwick Crown Court: “My family is broken, my heart is broken. Time will never heal this.”

Robert Brown had been out of prison for just six days when he ploughed into the brothers as they crossed a residential street in Coventry with their mother.

Brown, 53, was travelling at “at least 61mph” in a 30mph zone.

Revealing that her two surviving sons suffer nightmares, Ms Platt-May added: “This monstrous act has destroyed me.”

Speaking on behalf of Ms Platt-May and husband Reece, 30, family solicitor Rebecca Hearsey said Brown “will be out of prison in just a few years and free to continue his life. We call on the Government to honour Corey and Casper’s legacy by ensuring its proposals for tougher sentences for drivers who kill are made law as soon as possible.”

Jobless Brown, of Wyken, Coventry, admitted two counts of death by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle without insurance, driving while disqualified and using a motor vehicle without a licence.

The killer had taken a cocktail of cocaine and anti-depressants.

Jailing Brown and banning him from driving for 15 years Judge Andrew Lockhart QC said: “Your selfish and reckless driving has torn this family apart.”
