Netanyahu: Iran’s nuclear deal based entirely on lies

- By Joshua Haigh

ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last night accused Iran of secretly building nuclear weapons.

In 2015, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear energy programme in exchange for sanctions being lifted.

But Mr Netanyahu accused Tehran of “brazenly lying” and claimed Israel has top secret information from Iran’s alleged “atomic archives” that prove it continued to develop weapons.

He said on TV 55,000 pages of evidence and 55,000 files obtained by Israeli intelligence provided “new and conclusive proof of the secret nuclear weapons programme that Iran has been hiding for years from the international community”.

Mr Netanyahu has fought against the Iranian nuclear deal ever since it was signed, branding it “a bad mistake of historic proportions”. He also said he was sure US President Donald Trump – who has threatened to withdraw from the Iran deal – would “do the right thing” when reviewing the agreement.

In the past, Israel has claimed it would do whatever is necessary to stop Iran from establishing a military front against Syria.

Mr Netanyahu’s speech followed missile strikes in Syria which hit military bases used by Iran on Sunday, killing at least 16 people.

No country has so far claimed to be responsible but suspicion has fallen on Israel, which has accused Iran of using the war in Syria as a cover to build a military infrastructure.
