Police check on Bong chants

TOTTENHAM inched closer to securing a spot in next season’s Champions League by seeing off Watford at Wembley last night.

Goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane either side of half-time helped Spurs re-establish their five-point lead over Chelsea in the race for the top four.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men would have been warily looking over their shoulders after Chelsea beat Swansea 1-0 on Saturday to earn a third straight league victory, narrowing the gap with three games to play.

But Tottenham shook off a nervy opening, aided by a howler from Watford keeper Orestis Karnezis to gift Alli the opener.

Both sides squandered good chances in the second half before Kane’s 27th league goal made the game safe. POLICE are investigat­ing claims Brighton defender Gaetan Bong was subjected to monkey chants during Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Burnley.

Seagulls boss Chris Hughton labelled the behaviour of some Burnley supporters “shameful” after Bong, left, was allegedly subjected to vile racists taunts.

Rightback Bong sparked an FA probe after accusing West Brom striker Jay Rodriguez of making racist comments to him during a game at the Hawthorns in January.

Burnley-born Rodriguez, who spent five years as a Clarets player, escaped punishment after an independen­t review found the case unproven.

Bong later released a statement saying he stood by his claims.

Brighton have asked Sussex police to liaise with their Lancashire counterpar­ts over the alleged abuse after being contacted by several of their travelling fans.
