Poldark star Eleanor to enchant us with her songs

- By Mark Reynolds

BEST known as flame-haired Demelza in the hit BBC series, Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson has another skill to show off – her singing.

At the launch of her debut folk album Tales From Home, the 25-year-old yesterday told of her excitement – and said she has Poldark fans to thank for it.

She explained: “They inspired me to make this album. Without their support, this would not have been possible.”

The star also gave fans a sneaky online peek at the video for one of her songs, If You Could Read My Mind.

Fans of Cornish drama Poldark have been eagerly awaiting Ms Tomlinson’s album after hearing her sing in the series.

And critics say Tales From Home is an enchanting collection of folk-influenced covers from the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King and Bonnie Raitt.

A number of traditional Irish and Scottish folk songs also feature, such as The Spinning Wheel – a duet with Ms Tomlinson’s brother, Ross.

The connections with Poldark are strong.

The album is produced by Poldark soundtrack composer Anne Dudley, who received the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the 2017 Ivor Novellos.

Ms Dudley has previously recorded with Elton John, Tina Turner and Robbie Williams, and she also received an Academy Award for The Full Monty score.

London-born but Yorkshire educated, Ms Tomlinson has seen her star rise in the last two years.

While she is best known for her role in Poldark, she has also enjoyed several movie roles in films such as Jack the Giant Slayer and Loving Vincent.

Her musical foray will not stop Ms Tomlinson’s successful acting career.

She stars in the upcoming film Colette alongside Keira Knightley and Dominic West and recently appeared in the popular BBC adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Ordeal By Innocence.

The drama was meant to be aired at Christmas but was put on hold after sexual allegations were made against the actor Ed Westwick.

BBC bosses delayed screening after two women came forward to accuse Westwick – best known for his role in teen drama Gossip Girl – of rape in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

The star-studded drama, which also starred Bill Nighy and Anna Chancellor, was re-shot without him before being shown at Easter.

Tales From Home will go on general release on June 8.
