It’s the Wright time to quit says TV host Matthew

- By Mark Reynolds

TV PRESENTER Matthew Wright yesterday announced he is quitting his The Wright Stuff show after 18 years.

The host of the Channel 5 morning programme said it was time to try new projects.

Wright, 52, who has presented the current affairs show since it began in 2000, said: “After almost 18 glorious years on Channel 5 and with the show flying high in the ratings, I feel it’s time to try my hand at something new.” Ben Frow, the channel’s director of programmes, said: “We would like to thank Matthew for his passion, hard work and enthusiasm over the last 18 years and for making the show what it is today.

“He will be sorely missed and we wish him all the very best for the future.”

Yesterday Wright tweeted that there was a “big, big announcement coming”. On his show Wright discusses the talking points of the day with a panel of guests as well as taking calls from viewers.

Guests over the years have included Tony Blair, George Galloway, Ben Elton and Brian May.

On his website yesterday, it read: “Aside from Mrs Wright, the big love of Matthew’s life has been presenting The Wright Stuff.”

Wright began his career in newspapers, first at The Sun and later at The Daily Mirror, where he had a daily column for five years, before making his move into TV.

He is also known for presenting BBC weekly factual show Inside Out London and was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2013.

Last night Channel 5 said the show would continue with a new host.

However the TV channel said decisions about the show’s name and Wright’s replacement have not yet been made.
