Bike gang smashes way into store

- By John Chapman

A BRAZEN gang of moped thieves used a concrete post to smash their way into a Boots store, where they cleared out the perfume counter.

The four kept their crash helmets on to disguise themselves during the raid, which was captured on CCTV.

They smashed display cabinets to steal £5,000 of fragrances from the chemists in Barnet, north London, and came prepared with bags to remove the bottles.

The perfume included YSL, Armani, Hugo Boss, Givenchy, Paco Rabanne, Dior, Lacoste, DKNY and Cerruti.

The gang ignored passengers at a nearby night bus stop and fled on their mopeds after the early morning raid on Thursday last week.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Detectives in Barnet are appealing for information and have released CCTV following the burglary in Temple Fortune.

“Police were called at 1.30am on Thursday, April 26, to reports of a burglary at Boots the chemists in Finchley Road. More than £5,000 worth of aftershave and perfume was stolen.

“At 1.25am four suspects riding two dark- coloured mopeds pulled up outside the chemist.

“They were carrying large shopping bags and one of them carried a large cement post.

Witnesses

“One of the suspects used the post to smash open the front door of the chemist. Once broken, all four suspects entered the store, smashed the glass display cabinets and filled their bags with brands.”

Detective Constable Kim Louey, of Barnet’s Major Crime Unit, who is appealing for witnesses, said: “We know from CCTV that buses were operating at the time of the offence, with passengers getting off the bus as the suspects loaded up.”

No arrests have been made.
