Dale rescued by heroic Joe

-

JOE THOMPSON produced a fairy-tale finish after his goal in a 1-0 win over Charlton saved Rochdale from relegation.

With neighbours Oldham drawing 2-2 at Northampton, Thompson’s winner helped his side climb out of the relegation zone and condemn the Latics to the drop

Thompson, below, returned to action only in February after fighting off life-threatening cancer for the second time in four years.

“It was very fitting that Joe should score the winning goal,” said Rochdale manager Keith Hill.

Will Grigg’s 26th goal of the season for Wigan, meanwhile, sealed a 1-0 win at Doncaster that secured his side the title.

“That feeling that a supporter gets from seeing his team do well is so special,” said manager Paul Cook.

Wigan’s win meant Blackburn were left to settle for second despite a 2-1 victory over Oxford at Ewood Park, but manager Tony Mowbray said Rovers should be proud of their season.

“Ninety-six points – that’s a lot of points in any league.” Doncaster manager Darren Ferguson missed his side’s loss to Wigan to be with father Sir Alex as he underwent emergency surgery.

Assistant Gavin Strachan said: “It was just a case of myself, the staff, the players, putting the manager’s wishes into motion.”

Charlton’s play-off place was confirmed despite defeat as Plymouth lost 5-2 at Gillingham.
