Oceans of food for thought

-

THERE are times when we simply need to be healthy. Times that are important to our future and the way we live, whether it’s work or study or other events as we get older. And if our brain is healthy that’s a good start. Any day we can eat pretty much what we want. We have more food choices than ever before, from the vast array of fresh produce in markets and supermarkets to a world of fast food.

Yet while we might get what we want, we still don’t necessarily get what we need. Take Omega-3 DHA, a fatty acid but one of the “good” fats, vital throughout our lives. It is, however, often in short supply.

DHA accounts for up to 40 per cent of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the brain, making it a major part of what keeps us focused. It’s important during:

Times of stress – our lives are busy and our moods fluctuate, all too often leading to depression.

Exams – no matter how old you are, whether studying for GCSEs, A-levels or something work-related, DHA can help with reading, concentration and the way we deal with things.

Dementia – one of the major problems in later life, yet which a regular intake of DHA can help keep at bay.

Our bodies make little DHA so we need to make up for that with food – although it is largely found in fish (mackerel, salmon, calamari) and nuts, so few of us really will do that on a regular basis.

The answer is a regular dietary supplement that ensures we get what we need. There are many Omega-3 DHA supplements on offer but not all are the same. Top of the range is Bioglan Calamari Gold with golden calamari oil. Each capsule contains more Omega-3 DHA than standard fish and krill oil capsules combined.

It’s important, whether you’re getting on in life or simply thinking ahead. In the UK 600,000-800,000 people have dementia including one in six who are over 80. Given that we’re living longer, we owe it to ourselves to keep our minds in good shape and to make sure we keep our Omega-3 DHA intake regular.

Yet Omega-3 DHA isn’t just good for

Vision

our brains, it’s shown to be good for our eyes, helping reduce the risk of agerelated vision problems, and our heart.

People from countries where diets are rich in fish, such as Japan and the Mediterranean, are shown to be very healthy. Those from the Mediterranean have a much lower incidence of heart disease, despite their diet also being heavy in fat such as butter, and this is thought to be due to the high levels of Omega-3 DHA, which can help to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Summer’s the time to get more fish in your diet – but it’s also time to increase your intake of Omega-3 DHA. INFORMATION: Bioglan Calamari Gold 1000mg capsules are available from Holland & Barrett and Amazon.
