Wenger’s road woes worsened by Vardy

- Steve Madeley

LEICESTER

ARSENE WENGER’S farewell tour took in a predictably dismal penultimate stop as Gunners nemesis Jamie Vardy ensured a miserable night for the manager.

Vardy’s sixth goal in his last six games against the Gunners gave Leicester victory and left Wenger without an away point in 2018.

Wenger’s men had paid for a flat first-half display with an opening goal from Kelechi Iheanacho and a contentious red card for young Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled for Arsenal but Vardy made Wenger suffer from the penalty spot after 76 minutes, before Riyad Mahrez made the points safe.

Arsenal received an early warning from Vardy, whose shot was saved by Petr Cech, before Iheanacho gave Leicester a 14th-minute lead, firing home a half-volley from 12 yards.

A minute later, the misery was compounded for the Gunners when Mavropanos paid a heavy price for a basic mistake. His lazy pass was blocked by Iheanacho and the Arsenal defender responded with a crude grapple that earned him a straight red card for a professional foul.

Leicester struggled to make their extra man count and Aubameyang found an equaliser shortly after half-time. But with 14 minutes to go, Foxes substitute Demarai Gray tumbled under a lazy challenge from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Vardy slotted home the penalty.

Mahrez then made sure of the victory in the 90th minute, evading the offside trap and beating Cech low down, handing Wenger a 13th league defeat of a disappointing final season.
