Carlos: I’ve worked a miracle

- Alex Bywater

CARLOS Carvalhal claimed Swansea would have been Europa League contenders had he been given the whole season to work with them.

Carvalhal is set to be axed when Swansea’s relegation is confirmed in tomorrow’s clash with Stoke, barring a last-minute mathematical miracle.

Long serving players Leon Britton and Angel Rangel will follow Carvalhal out of the exit door after the former confirmed his retirement at the end of the current campaign.

It means a summer of upheaval is on the way at the Liberty, chairman Huw Jenkins under pressure to quit from the club’s Supporters Trust and American owners Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan also targets for frustrated fans.

Carvalhal insists he will discuss his future with Jenkins after the meeting with Stoke, but was at pains yesterday to defend his record and stress how his results surpass those of predecessor Paul Clement.

The Portuguese claimed Swansea would have been candidates to qualify for the Europa League, had he been in charge all season. “We have done a very good job with 20 points from 17 games,” he said.

“It is like a miracle and we are not far away from the form of teams in the Europa League if you do that over a whole season.

“We achieved a good path together, but the problem was the 13 points from the first 20 games.”
