Great-gran had six falls in just a fortnight

-

GREAT-GRANDMOTHER Ellen White raised seven children as a single mother but was forced to sell her house to cover costs at a care-assisted housing facility in Kent.

The former Lambeth Council carer suffered six falls in a two-week period in November last year, one which left her with a serious gash to her head and a broken wrist. Suffering with dementia she had sensors fitted to her bed which were meant to alert carers every time she moved.

When she was found on floor of her bedroom covered in blood she was suffering hypothermia, suggesting she had been motionless for some time.

Her family claimed bed sensors had been unplugged and that her treatment, if not abusive, was at the very least neglectful.

Gina Begbie, Ellen’s granddaughter, said she and her family were ‘horrified’ and deeply distressed by her injuries and were still seeking answers from the multiple agencies involved in her care to find out what happened to her.

Gina said: “We want answers and we are not getting any. The injuries our nan received are truly shocking. It’s not good enough that she lives with dementia and at 90 years old is, in our eyes, being failed.”

Dublin-born Ellen was taken to hospital after being found where she was treated for five weeks.

She died on March 21 from injuries her family claimed were the direct result of “preventable neglect”.

A spokesman for the care providers responsible for Ellen when she was injured was unavailable for comment last night.
