How children use phone’s calculator to hide porn snaps

YOUNGSTERS are using “sneaky” apps to deceive their parents, cyber security experts have warned.

A list of the 10 smartphone apps teenagers may be using is being widely shared on social media.

The Private Photos “Calculator” app, for example, has a calculator icon and opens to a functioning keypad interface.

But a four-digit code takes users to folders in which they can store images away from their “photos” folder. The app can be used by adults who are security conscious. It could also be used by children to conceal unsuitable images.

A Durham Police spokesman said: “The app is essentially a secret photo album that children can use to hide photos or videos from their parents.

“We would urge parents to be vigilant and discourage their children from using such an app.”

Other apps popular with children have been blamed for encouraging bullying.

The app Ask.fm is a social networking site where users can create profiles and send each other questions. However, it has allegedly been linked to severe cyberbullying as it allows users to ask and answer questions anonymously.

Another app with a sinister side is “Hot or Not” where you upload your best pictures and get rated by other users. But the goal, according to cyber experts, is to “hook up”.

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “The internet is an amazing place for teenagers to learn, create and socialise. But with the digital world evolving all the time, it is vital that parents talk to their children about their online lives.

“This could include talking about what personal information or photos are risky to share online, as well as the fact that new friends online might not be who they say they are.”

US blogger April Requard, who compiled the apps hit list, said: “We have to talk to our kids and teach them how to navigate through this online world.

“I believe strongly in not blocking everything, but in my opinion, there are certain apps that are just off-limits,” she said. 7. Burnbook An anonymous gossip app. 8. Wishbone Users compare whatever they want to. 9. Kik Messenger Send and receive mobile web pages. 10. Instagram Users “like” photos and videos.
