Wane calls time on Wigan

- Ross Heppenstall

SHAUN WANE could cross codes into rugby union after the shock news he is to leave Wigan at the end of the season.

The former Wigan prop, 53, has led them to two Grand Final wins, a Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and World Club Challenge since taking over in 2012.

He said: “I feel now is the right time for me to seek a new challenge. These accolades have given me personal and professional satisfaction and the memories will remain with me evermore.”

Wane, right, has been touted for a possible switch to Catalans at the end of the season, working as a successor to or possibly alongside current incumbent Steve McNamara.

He has also been linked with a move onto the Scotland RU coaching staff and has previously spoken of his ambition to work in the NRL. Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards, one of Wigan’s most iconic players, could be tempted back as Wane’s successor. LEEDS captain Kallum Watkins, 27, has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Saturday’s 38-10 Magic Weekend loss to Castleford. CAMERON NORRIE, the British No 3, beat Jose HernandezFernandez, of the Dominican Republic, 7-6, 6-1 in the first round of the Lyon Open yesterday.

Norrie, the world No 102, had opened up a 3-1 first set lead after an early break, before he took the tie-break.

The 21-year-old then raced through the second set in just over half an hour and will now meet German Maximilian Marterer after his 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Frenchman Gael Monfils.
