Give my son the brother he dreamed of

- By Gillian Crawley

A MOTHER who suffered the anguish of 18 miscarriages to give her son the sibling he longed for has finally seen the family’s dream come true.

Debra Cowgill, 33, had already endured two miscarriages before having son Corey, 10, with husband Darren, 40.

Doctors could find no reason for the heartbreaking ordeal.

The couple tried for 10 years but the longest Debra managed to stay pregnant was 15 weeks.

Debra, one of seven siblings, said as Corey got older he would beg for a brother or sister.

She said: “He would ask every day about having a brother or sister and I think it was him that kept us both going through the hard times.

“It became harder with each miscarriage but I never thought I would stop.

“I think carrying on helped me to deal with the loss.”

But the family, of Earby, Lancashire, finally saw their dreams come true when Debra was induced at 37 weeks on May 2.

Little Taylor Ray was born at Burnley General Hospital, weighing 6lb 4oz, and Corey was the first person to meet his baby brother. The boys are now inseparable.

Debra, who works for a hairdressing wholesalers, said: “It was always so difficult going back into the same room every pregnancy for a scan.

“Every time to be told there was no heartbeat, time and time again. But I never gave up hope and was so positive about this pregnancy.

“Corey started to cry when we told him I was pregnant this time around. He even came along to the scans.”

She added: “He is great with his Proud mother Debra Cowgill cradles newborn son Taylor Ray and, left, with her ‘perfect family’– 10-year-old Corey and her husband Darren little brother, almost like the third parent. We don’t get a look in.

“He takes him into his bedroom to watch Liverpool play football too. The only thing we can’t get him to do is to change a nappy.”

Darren, who works for a bedroom company, was worried about the physical and mental effects the miscarriages could have on his wife but Debra never doubted that another birth would happen.

She said: “We never regret that we kept trying. Things happen for a reason and now we have the perfect family.”
