Sarah Fletcher was in two minds about having a smart meter fitted. But her bills tell a different story

-

When Sarah Fletcher first heard about smart meters, she was worried her monthly payments would soar.

“I’m on disability living allowance so I have to be very careful with money. It’s one of my main concerns because I have to keep my house warm,” says Sarah, 57, from Birmingham.

“I was worried the meter wouldn’t be accurate and I’d end up paying more for the same amount of energy.”

But after receiving a big rebate from her energy company one year, she decided to give smart meters a try.

“Because I live on my own, I don’t use much energy but then suddenly I’d get a big bill. It didn’t seem right.

“Then one year the company told me I was owed a £165 rebate, which seemed like a huge amount.”

Sarah had a smart meter installed and now only pays for the energy she uses.

And despite her initial concerns, since having a smart meter, Sarah has been convinced that it was worthwhile having one put in.

“Although I was worried that my energy bills would go up it’s much better now that I’m only paying for what I’m using especially in the summer when I use less anyway.

“I can sit out in my back garden when it’s warm and the bills are less than they were before.”

Now Sarah’s mind is at ease. And – like 73 per cent of people who have a smart meter in their home – Sarah would now recommend them to a friend or neighbour.

“If a friend was considering getting a smart meter I’d tell them to give it a go. It’s great to only pay for what you use,” she says.
