Briton, 76, hacked to death with cutlass in island raid

A BRITISH pensioner has been hacked to death in his Caribbean home by a masked, swordwielding bandit.

Elias Steve Louisy, 76, and his wife Muriel, 73, were attacked and left for dead.

Mr Louisy, who lived in London for many years before retiring to the island of St Lucia, died from his wounds on Monday.

Terrified neighbours told how they heard screams coming from the couple’s home after the raider reportedly broke in through a window and attacked Mr Louisy with a cutlass.

Local reports said the couple were preparing to leave their home last Friday when Mrs Louisy became concerned that her husband appeared to be lingering inside.

She went back into the house to discover the raider standing over her husband.

She began screaming and the intruder chased and attacked her, before fleeing.

Mrs Louisy was said to be in a stable condition in hospital yesterday.

St Lucia police said three people were in custody in connection with the killing.

A neighbour said: “Two men ran inside the house.

“They look in the house, they look everywhere. They didn’t see anything.

“In his head they give him all the blows and the lady was covered with blood.”

The horrific attack on the Louisys was initially reported as a robbery but reports said local people believe it is more likely to have been due to a land dispute.

The tragedy took place in Desruisseaux, family home of former England footballer Jermain Defoe.

Ten people have been murdered on the popular Caribbean island this year.

Britons killed in the Caribbean include newlyweds Ben and Catherine Mullany, who were murdered in 2008 while on their honeymoon on the island of Antigua.

The couple, who were due to return to the United Kingdom the next day, were killed during a robbery attempt.

Mrs Mullany, 31, was shot in the head and died instantly and her husband was shot in the neck.

Trainee physiotherapist Mr Mullany, 31, fell into a coma in the ambulance and died a week later.

Another victim was car salesman Steven Weare, 49, who was found dead in Barbados last year. Mr Weare, of Kirkham, Lancashire, was reported missing on August 23 and his body found nine days later.

Former care worker Rose Wyatt, from Berkshire, was murdered by a thug armed with a cutlass as she walked her dog along a beach on the island of Dominica.

The body of British lawyer Richard Wheeler, 73, was found with “chop wounds” inside his home on the island of Tobago in 2015.

His wife Grace, 67, was discovered in the garden with her throat cut.
