screen time than any other character.” Fans can look forward to a dramatic clash in the forthcoming series as a new man comes between Ross and his wife.

As Ross enters the world of politics he spends time in London, where he mixes with the upper echelons of society – including dastardly MP Monk Adderley.

He is played by Cambridge-educated Max Bennett, 33, who has worked on the West End stage and previously appeared in Anna Karenina and The Duchess – both alongside Keira Knightley.

Demelza, who cheated on Ross with Hugh Armitage (played by Joshua Whitehouse), finds adjusting to life in London hard and she falls under Adderley’s spell.

Bennett said of his character: “His interest is particularly piqued by Demelza and that is where the collision occurs. Apart from being beautiful, Demelza is very unusual in his social circle, she is an outsider and that is intriguing to him.

“He also just likes playing with people so having a new and slightly naive person on the scene is fun for him and is also a chance to stick the knife in with Ross.”

Scriptwriter Debbie Horsfield predicted: “I think the character people will enjoy most is Monk.

“He’s completely amoral but such a vividly drawn character. Ross encounters him in London. Ross really does clash with him.

“He’s a friend of George’s, that’s how they first meet. He’s another one everyone will love to hate.”
