Jack’s Cat fight

-

JACK ROSS says he is excited to be taking charge of an “incredible football club” after being named Sunderland’s new manager.

Ross, right, has signed a two-year contract after compensation was agreed for his move to the Stadium of Light from St Mirren.

The Black Cats have been looking for a replacement for Chris Coleman since he left last month following the club’s relegation to League One. “This is a fantastic opportunity,” Ross said. “There’s a lot of work to be done in reshaping the squad to ensure that we hit the ground running and I can’t wait.” Ross was named this season’s PFA Scotland Manager of the Year after leading St Mirren to the Championship title. BRIGHTON have agreed a deal to sign Deportivo La Coruna striker Florin Andone for an undisclosed fee.

The Romania international will join on a five-year contract when the window for international transfers opens on June 8.

The 25-year-old scored 18 goals in 69 appearances during his two seasons with the Spanish side. SCUNTHORPE have appointed Nick Daws as their new manager following his spell as interim boss. THERE was no doubt about the most anticipated match at the 1974 World Cup: hosts West Germany against East Germany.

Football and the political tension of the Cold War came together on one famous evening in Hamburg. The attendance was 60,200, of which only 2,000 were from the East. The East German government had hand-picked fans to travel, with the majority from the Stasi secret police agency.

Both sides had already qualified for the next stage but that did nothing to reduce the spectacle as the East won 1-0 with a goal from Jurgen Sparwasser, left.

West Germany went on to beat Holland in the final.
