Electoral Commission fund shows contempt for voters
THE liberal establishment still believes it can stop Brexit happening. The fact that the British people voted two years ago to leave the EU means nothing to them. Rather than accepting the outcome of a democratic vote they work unceasingly to overturn it.
It has now emerged that the Electoral Commission has been given a budget of £829,000 to pay for its “activities relating to a European Parliamentary election in 2019”. Curiously these elections take place in May next year and Britain is scheduled to leave the EU in March. So what’s going on?
The Commission says that it has set aside this money as a “precautionary measure so that we have the necessary funds to deliver our functions at a European Parliamentary election in the unlikely event they do go ahead”.
To which one can only ask: Which part of “Britain is leaving the EU in March 2019” do you fail to understand?
It is extraordinary that the powers that be are still in denial, unable to accept the result of the referendum. Tory MP Iain Duncan Smith said: “It is complete madness to earmark money to spend on an election that the Prime Minister has already said we will not fight unless you are working to make sure the UK stays in the EU, in which case you are working against the British people.”
The fact is that many Leave voters are disheartened by the Brexit negotiations and do indeed fear that our departure from the EU will only be partial or may not happen if the establishment has its way. News of the Commission’s fund only fuels that concern.
