THE SPA AT THE MIDLAND, MANCHESTER

- ELIZABETH ARCHER

FACILITIES

Slap bang in the middle of Manchester, the ornate red-stone frontage of this Grade II-listed hotel is a sight to behold.

And the inside is no less impressive with period features, a plush 1920s-style bar and two elegant restaurants.

It’s a hotel steeped in history, where Charles Rolls was first introduced to Henry Royce, Winston Churchill often stayed and the Beckhams had their first date.

But the hotel is no relic. A short walk from the main shopping areas and a stone’s throw from restaurants and bars, it offers easy access to all Manchester has to offer.

It is a 10-minute stroll from mainline train stations too.

After a long day of shopping or a night partying in Manchester’s vibrant nightclubs, the tranquil spa is the perfect way to unwind.

Once home to traditional Turkish baths, the modern spa now features a heated pool, salt-infused steam room, sauna and gym.

Expect birthday parties and hen-dos at this conveniently located hotel.

TREATMENTS TESTED ESPA Time Off Your Feet, available as part of The Spa Break package, 50 mins

After a long week, this relaxing two-in-one treatment was exactly what I needed.

First the therapist gave me a short, hydrating facial before exfoliating my lower legs with a luxurious scrub and giving me a firm foot massage.

The treatment was then rounded off with a scalp massage which was so relaxing it almost sent me to sleep.

Afterwards, my skin felt smooth and plump, and my tired feet felt rejuvenated.

ESPA Rebalancing Ritual, available as part of The Spa Break package, 50 mins

My friend chose this muscle-soothing massage treatment after feeling stress build up in her shoulders.

After an express facial, she had a deep-tissue massage to work out the knots in her muscles.

The treatment can be tailored to individual needs so during a consultation she asked the therapist to focus on her shoulders, back and neck.

Afterwards she felt soothed and relaxed and her back felt more limber.

GOOD POINTS

Our treatments took place in the dual treatment room which has two beds side by side. It was nice to be able to enjoy the experience together and is perfect for couples or friends.

Afterwards the relaxation room was the ideal place to chill out, especially the comfortable sleeping pods which hang from the ceiling and are great for taking a short nap.

Mr Cooper’s restaurant was an elegant setting for dinner, with high ceilings and windows that flood the space with light.

The menu is full of hearty and delicious British classics.

The spatchcock chicken with red wine and thyme jus was so tender, the meat fell off the bone.

WHAT IT COSTS

The Spa Break starts at £160 per guest. It includes a two-course lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast and a 50-minute treatment.
