For summer sun protection

-

generous amount before you go out in the sun and make sure you wear a hat and sunglasses as well. Best for: FACE Crystal Clear Protect & Repair SPF40, £45 (crystalclear.co.uk) This combines UV sunscreen technology with anti-ageing ingredients including vitamin E and natural extracts that soothe skin.

USE A SEPARATE SPF PRODUCT

Many foundations and moisturisers now contain SPF. While this is better than nothing, it is not a substitute for wearing proper sunscreen.

Chances are it won’t protect against UVA rays and for it to be fully effective, you would need to reapply every two hours.

To get the maximum benefit apply your skincare in the correct order.

After cleansing, apply a serum or moisturiser. Wait a few minutes then apply sunscreen before putting on your make-up.

At night always cleanse your face thoroughly to prevent sunscreen build-up, which can block your pores.

CHEMICAL VS MINERAL

Some suncreams use chemical filters, which act like a sponge absorbing UVA and UVB rays. Others use physical filters – also known as mineral filters – which work like a mirror by deflecting rays off the surface of the skin. They both offer the same protection. If you have sensitive and allergy-prone skin, stick to mineral filters such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as they are less likely to cause a reaction. Best for: SENSITIVE Epionce Ultra Shield Lotion SPF50+, £40.50 (epionce.co.uk) Fast-absorbing, this broad-spectrum lotion contains zinc oxide so it is perfect for sensitive or allergic skin types. Best for: ANTI-AGEING HSSC 24-7 Moisturising SPF50, £30 (harleystreetskincare.com) This anti-ageing sunscreen contains yeast extract, which helps renew and repair skin cells while restoring suppleness, radiance and firmness.

TRUTH ABOUT SHELF LIFE

Sunscreen has to have a shelf life of at least 30 months or be labelled with a use-by date. So if no date is marked, the product is unopened and has been stored in a cool, dry place, then it should be fine to use. However, if you have already opened the product, look for the “use by after opening” symbol. This is usually a little jar with the lid off and a number next to it, for example 12M means it will last for 12 months after the product has been opened. A quick smell and a look at the consistency should also indicate whether it is still good to use.
