Hats off to Epsom celebrities, winners in fashion stakes
EPSOM was awash with colour and sartorial splendour for Ladies Day yesterday.
Racegoers were joined by high-profile guests including the Duchess of Cambridge’s younger brother James Middleton and Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Charlotte Hawkins.
Former reality TV star Spencer Matthews was also looking dapper, alongside his glamorous girlfriend, the Irish model Vogue Williams.
And it was a good day for veteran jockey Frankie Dettori, 47, who narrowly won the Coronation Cup on Cracksman.
In the stands, daring headwear appeared to be the order of the day, with oversized hats and flamboyant fascinators seen on the course, alongside floral frocks and jumpsuits.
Epsom is one of the fashion calendar’s favourite days – and revellers were seen popping bottles of champagne as they descended on the racecourse in their dozens.
Many of them were keen to take part in the annual Style Award competition, which offers prizes for the day’s best-dressed guests.
Daily Express fashion stylist Rivkie Baum said: “To avoid a fashion faux pas, racegoers had to stick to some key trend rules.
“Florals are a style staple for race day – but this season, oversized prints in bright hues provided an instant update.
“And having made it into the Ascot style guide last year, jumpsuits also remained positive for occasion-wear this season.
“Fit was key, however, so avoiding anything too short or too tight was vital.”
After drunken behaviour and fighting has dogged other race meetings, strict rules were laid down at Epsom.
Derby Day – one of the biggest occasions of the sporting summer – will take place today.
