Poldark fans’ 4,000-mile pilgrimage

- By Sarah Westcott

HORDES of Poldark super-fans have descended on Cornwall to retrace the steps of the period drama’s stars.

The devoted American and Canadian fans have travelled 4,000 miles to experience the show’s rugged coastal setting for themselves.

The Cornish saga, which returns to BBC1 next Sunday, has won thousands of fans from across the Atlantic.

Many of those making the trip to the UK were hoping to catch a glimpse of actor Aidan Turner, 34, who plays Captain Ross Poldark, on set.

Poldark devotee Bonny Wise organised the “film sites tour” for her and 26 other fans.

Bonny, 61, from Indiana, said: “The series does such a good job at showing how beautiful Cornwall is and for many of these people this is the first time they’ve been to England.

“They were thrilled and excited to see where the show was filmed. The story is amazing, not just because it’s a love story but because it’s so much about the history of this area.

“I knew very little about Cornwall before Poldark and would say that the show has done a tremendous amount for the area.”

In the first three days of their trip, the group covered around 700 miles.

Bonny said: “Some of the film sites are in very remote locations but we went to visit them.

“Some found it very emotional. I’m glad that I’m helping make people’s dreams come true.” Amanda-Rae Prescott, from New York, said: “Inside I’m screaming and crying like a little kid. It is just an amazing feeling to be here.”

Poldark lovers will be treated to the sight of Captain Ross’s toned torso in the first episode of the fourth series.

Speaking about his “complex” character, Turner said that Ross is “flawed but his heart is in the right place and in this series we see him change and maybe lose some of that ego.”
