Klass of 2018...classical stars hit the right note

- By Joshua Haigh

GOLDEN girl Myleene Klass hosted a star-studded night for the triumphant return of the Classical Brit Awards.

Just like its pop music equivalent, the ceremony, back last night following a five-year hiatus, celebrates outstanding achievements over the past year.

Former member of pop band Hear’Say, Klass arrived to host the glitzy event in a dazzling low-cut golden gown.

Opening up about its return, classically-trained Klass, 40, revealed that she felt grateful to be a part of giving classical music the “platform it deserves”.

She said: “It’s wonderful to see this genre of music getting the platform it deserves and important the new generation of artists are represented, too.”

Forces’ sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the bash.

Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins paused for a beaming smile on the red carpet, while Love Island’s Montana Brown, 22, posed for pictures dressed in a floorlength sequin dress.

Others to walk the red carpet were Good Morning Britain’s Charlotte Hawkins and Female Artist of the Year nominee, pianist Beatrice Rana, who lost out on the night to opera singer Renée Fleming.

But it was teenage cello sensation Sheku Kanneh-Mason, 19, who walked away the big winner of the evening, taking home Male Artist of the Year and Critics’ Choice after a remarkable rise to stardom with his debut album Inspiration.

Kanneh-Mason won an army of new fans when he performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding service last month.

Dame Vera Lynn’s daughter, Virginia, attended the ceremony on the 101-year-old singer’s behalf.

Accepting the award, Virginia said: “She’s had so many wonderful awards but for her to have this on top of all the others is fantastic.”

Other winners on the night were Michael Ball and Alfie Boe for Best Group and Best Album.

The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman, walked away with Best Soundtrack and Britain’s Got Talent winner, pianist Tokio Myers, won Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

Theatre legend Andrew Lloyd Webber took home a Special Recognition Award in honour of his achievements with musical theatre and education.
