Sex, walking and wine...secrets to feeling young

- By Astrid Hall

AN ACTIVE love life, drinking red wine and dancing are among the top 40 things that keep us feeling young, a poll revealed yesterday.

Singing along to music, spending time with younger people and staying positive also help older Britons feel more sprightly.

Walking and keep-fit activities, including cycling and swimming, were also seen as good ways of staying young at heart.

Eight in 10 of the 1,500 over-65s polled said they believed in the saying “you’re only as old as you feel”.

And 78 per cent claimed to feel younger than the number on their last birthday card.

The research, commissioned by Fairy Non-Bio, found the typical respondent felt about nine years younger than their age. Threequarters put this down to a positive mental attitude, while half thanked a healthy lifestyle, including getting enough sleep and eating plenty of fruit and vegetables.

When it comes to feeling good on the inside, those quizzed admitted that the outside also matters.

Wearing the clothes you like, treating yourself to nice haircuts and using sun cream also featured in the top 40.

More than half said their style choices have changed with age, and a similar number said their skin had become more sensitive.

Almost a third now favour softer fabrics such as cotton to avoid irritating their skin, and 46 per cent opt for looser fitting clothes. Fairy Non-Bio’s spokesman said: “Skin sensitivity as we get older shouldn’t mean we have to avoid wearing the clothes we want to, the ones that make us feel our best.”

RESEARCH shows that there are 40 things that keep you young. Walking is top of the list, which also includes massages, an active love life, listening to music, kissing and red wine. But what’s wrong with white wine? Especially on a warm summer evening when kissing and music may also feature…
