PICKS OF THE DAY

Documentary: Trevor McDonald: Return To South Africa, 9pm, ITV

When Sir Trevor McDonald (left) first visited South Africa as a young reporter the country was in the grip of apartheid. He was, in fact, the first person to interview Nelson Mandela after his release from prison in 1990, witnessing history in the making. To mark Mandela’s 100th birthday this week, the veteran broadcaster returns to the country for this special documentary. Upon his return, he asks whether South Africa is still a land of division, inequality and violent crime or whether it has turned into the “Rainbow Nation” Mandela had hoped for. As always when McDonald is involved, this is superb television, reminding us just what is a national treasure he is.

Crime: Conviction: Murder In Suburbia, 9pm, BBC2

Louise Shorter (left) is a key part of Inside Justice, a not-for-profit organisation that looks into alleged miscarriages of justice. The case under the microscope in this special programme is the murder of Linda Razzell in 2003. She was killed after dropping her children off at school. Her husband, Glyn, was convicted of the murder but Shorter enlists criminal lawyers, ex-police officers and forensics experts to see if there is any new evidence that could challenge that.

Soap: Coronation Street, 8pm, ITV

Given that tonight’s World Cup match is far from the most glamorous tie of the tournament, there is likely to be less fighting over the TV remote than in previous evenings. Eva and Toyah face the consequences of their lies while Hope blocks a reunion for Fiz (Jennie McAlpine, above) and Tyrone. When Alya wonders if she’s bitten off more than she can chew, Sarah is given food for thought.

Drama: Ackley Bridge, 8pm, C4

Still in shock over Iqbal’s secret family, Kaneez confronts the other woman and decides it is time to take her life back. When Rashid (Tony Jayawardena, above left) asks her out on a date, Kaneez realises that her own happiness should come above all else. Meanwhile, Emma and Sami’s affair is galvanised when he helps her to convince the Asian pupils to audition for the new school production.

Drama: Our Girl, 9.10pm, BBC1

After tonight’s match between Russia and Egypt we return to see how Georgie Lane is doing. What went on in Afghanistan and Nigeria has taken its toll on her and she is recovering alongside her 2-section comrades on a training mission in Belize. Wanting to prove herself a capable leader, she heads a team against James to settle a score but is forced to step up when events take a turn for the worse. Michelle Keegan and Rolan Bell (both right) star.
