Macca’s amazing Carpool singalong gives fans a lift

-

After the pair finished an energetic rendition of the song, James said: “If my granddad was here, he would get an absolute kick out of this.”

The Carpool Karaoke segment for Corden’s show, broadcast on Sky One last night, began with him seated in his car before making a phone call and playing one of The Beatles’ best-known hits.

He said: “I’m in Liverpool and I need your help. Yeah, I need somebody, not just anybody, please, please help me.”

Sir Paul then climbed into the passenger seat and the pair broke into an epic version of the Beatles classic Drive My Car.

In a break with Carpool Karaoke tradition, the veteran singer then took the wheel and drove Corden, who appeared visibly star-struck, around the streets of Liverpool. During chats, Sir Paul revealed he wrote his first song at the age of 14, titled I Lost My Little Girl, before treating fans to a snippet.

The pair then drove to Penny Lane, which inspired a song of the same name based on Sir Paul’s experiences of growing up in the area. They stopped at the barber shop mentioned in the song and Sir Paul took selfies with stunned staff.

Throughout their journey, Sir Paul pointed out notable landmarks from his youth, including a church where he was once in the choir.

The singer revealed that the band thought their music would only last 10 years. The pair also visited Sir Paul’s former home where he demonstrated how his tunes sounded better in the bathroom – “the acoustic chamber”.

Back in the car, Corden tried out a few Fab Four looks, including a moptop wig and turquoise blue Sgt Pepper uniform.

They finished the tour with an impromptu gig in city centre pub The Philharmonic, with Sir Paul belting out A Hard Day’s Night, Love Me Do, Back In The USSR and finally Hey Jude.

Fans hailed Sir Paul’s appearance as the best Karaoke ever.

One viewer wrote: “It was not only brilliant, but also emotional, heartwarming and the best Carpool Karaoke episode that has ever been recorded.”
