It’s a thin dividing line for Davina...

- By Gillian Crawley

DAVINA McCall divided the opinions of fans on social media with the latest pictures of her startling gym-honed body.

The TV presenter posted a shot to her 890,000 Instagram followers this week of her posing in a floral print bikini showing off rock-hard abs and ultra-low body fat.

Davina, 50, joked in the caption how she made no apologies for the selfie, insisting it would not be the last one of her.

And she has revealed the secret of her form was in her fitness regime and a strict sugar-free diet. The mother of three said: “I cannot quite believe I am posting pictures of myself in bikinis still.

“I have so much to be grateful for, my kids are number one but right behind them at number two is how my fitness journey has made me feel. If I’m groggy, sluggish, negative it always sorts me out.”

Awareness

But the picture got 55,000 “likes” and, while some said she looked “great” and “amazing”, others complained that the image made them feel “uncomfortable”. Some made comments like “please put a bit of weight on” and “too thin!”.

Another follower wrote: “Surely you must understand body pressures and self-esteem young people posting pictures of themselves in bikinis underwear and naked. It’s a massive safeguarding issue. We shouldn’t be encouraging it and Davina should have this awareness.”

But another one added: “Why should Davina...not post about fitness? Her body is an advert for her work. Physical and mental health are important and we must all take personal responsibility for that.”

Davina is no stranger to showing off her lean form as she posed in a black bikini to mark her birthday last October.

She explained that she works out three or four times a week for 45 minutes to an hour. She has since conquered addictions to alcohol and drugs and quit smoking.

Davina eats a daily protein-rich breakfast of eggs and spinach with halloumi salad for lunch followed by a “smart carb casserole” dinner of sweet potato, broccoli and pulses. WHILE everyone recognises addictions to alcohol, drugs or gambling, people find it more difficult to understand that a compulsion to exercise can be unhealthy – especially in the face of constant messages to get fitter to improve health.

An addiction is using a substance, object or thing to change the way you feel about yourself.

That is the same for someone who cannot stop after a couple of drinks or if instead of going to the gym two or three times a week, goes every day, or even twice a day, for hours.

Compulsive exercise – just like other addictions – becomes central to the person’s life and hides issues such as anger, anxiety, stress, work issues and relationship problems.
