Boris flies home to MPs’ jibes

approach to Brexit that could harm British prosperity.”

Mrs May’s message came after Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss attacked her Cabinet colleagues’ demands for budget increases.

Ms Truss has warned other ministers that a new era of high-taxand-spend would “hamper the success of post-Brexit Britain”.

Ms Truss suggested it was “not macho” to demand more money for departmental budgets.

She said: “I will make it clear to my Cabinet colleagues that it’s not macho to demand more money. It’s much tougher – and fairer to people – to demand better value for money.

“The more the Government spends, the higher taxes have to be. And that means businesses and people have less freedom to spend on their priorities. And that in turn will hamper the success of post-Brexit Britain.” BORIS Johnson endured MPs’ jibes yesterday as he appeared in the Commons for the first time since missing Monday night’s crunch Heathrow vote.

With an official visit to Afghanistan, the Foreign Secretary avoided the choice between voting for government policy of a third runway, or resigning to oppose it in line with his vow to his west London constituents.

Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry told Mr Johnson: “Four years ago you were asked the biggest lesson that you had learned from your supposed hero Winston Churchill and your answer was, I quote, ‘Never give in, never give in, never give in’.

“For some reason Churchill didn’t add, ‘Unless you can catch a plane to Kabul’.”

Beyond a wry smile, Mr Johnson did not respond.
