Morkel’s mauling scars Tykes

-

MORNE MORKEL excelled with the ball as leaders Surrey bounced back to take control of their County Championship clash with Yorkshire at Scarborough.

The former South Africa fast bowler finished with 5-39 from 16 overs as Yorkshire were bowled out for 152 in their second innings, setting the visitors a victory target of 228.

And they made a strong start before close of play on day three by reaching 89 without loss.

Captain Rory Burns confidently led the way with 55 not out and Mark Stoneman was unbeaten on 32, his highest score of 2018.

If they go on to win, it would be Surrey’s fifth in seven matches this summer.

It was a display of champion quality from the Division One leaders having conceded a 75run first-innings lead during the early stages of the day.

Their fightback started with the bat as Morkel (29) contributed to an eighth-wicket stand of 56 with Ollie Pope, who made an eye-catching 69 not out.

Pope is the current leading run-scorer in Division One with 654 at an average of 93. Meanwhile, top-flight strugglers Lancashire and Hampshire look destined to play out a high-scoring draw at Old Trafford.

Despite centuries from Alex Davies (115) and Dane Vilas (134), the hosts could not overtake Hampshire’s first-innings total of 451.

Lancashire with 411.

The visitors then reached 66-2 second time around, reaching stumps 106 runs ahead. finished
