Cricket legend Boycott’s quadruple heart op

- By Paul Jeeves

CRICKET legend Geoffrey Boycott has undergone a quadruple heart bypass and was last night recovering at home.

The 77-year-old batsman turned commentator spent 10 days in hospital after being rushed there.

Boycott’s family have told fans that he will miss the start of the Test series against India but he hopes to be back at the microphone for the third Test at Nottingham on August 18.

Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary deemed the invasive surgery a success and he has been allowed to continue his recovery at home.

His Test Match Special broadcasting pals were quick to pay him bedside visits and send best wishes.

Boycott’s daughter Emma broke news of the health scare on Twitter yesterday afternoon.

She posted: “My father had quadruple bypass open heart surgery on Wednesday, June 27.

“He spent 10 days in hospital in Leeds, with most of that time in the Cardiac Critical Care unit.

“The surgeon says the operation was a success and has now allowed him home to recover from the invasive surgery.

“This will take some time so he will not be commentating at the start of the England v India Test series but hopes to be back at work for the third Test at Nottingham.”

Messages of support flooded for the popular, outspoken Yorkshire veteran.

BBC radio commentator Jonathan Agnew, 58, revealed that he had popped in to see him.

He said: “I went to visit the old soand-so this morning and can confirm that he’s in rude health and will probably outlive all of us.

“My sympathy lies with Rachael [his wife], who has to nurse him!”

His message read: “Great to see you looking so well, Fiery.

“Treat this convalescence like one of your innings .... SLOW x”

Former England captain and now commentary box colleague Michael Vaughan, 43, added: “Dig in Geoffrey, we’ll miss you lots.”

Boycott responded to well-wishers’ messages with upbeat responses.

Emma was at his bedside doing the typing as he recuperates.

Boycott returned to live in Yorkshire in 2013 after a seven-year absence, in which he lived in Jersey and South Africa.

He and Rachael bought Boston Hall, a £1.75million Georgian mansion, near Wetherby.

He scored 8,114 runs for England and hit 22 centuries.
