Clooney hurt in bike crash

- By Mark Reynolds

HOLLYWOOD heart-throb George Clooney was yesterday rushed to hospital after being hit by a car while riding his scooter.

The A-list actor was riding alone in Sardinia – where he is filming his latest TV series, Catch-22 – when the accident happened.

Witnesses said the 57-year-old hit his head on the windscreen of a Mercedes before striking the ground and injuring his knee.

Officials at the nearby city of Sassari confirmed Clooney had been involved in a “minor accident” but said he had no serious injuries.

Slammed

Clooney is a seasoned motorcyclist who goes on annual road trips with his friend Rande Gerber.

But in recent weeks, without his beloved Harley-Davidson, the actor and his 40-year-old wife Amal have been seen zipping around the Italian island on a Yamaha scooter.

As well as filming the pair have also been enjoying some free time Paramedics assisting George Clooney yesterday. Left, the actor and wife Amal on a scooter holiday in Sardinia away from their young twins, Alexander and Ella.

It is understood that the accident happened at about 8am as the star was leaving a hotel in the coastal village of Costa Corallina in the north of the island.

An Italian police spokesman said: “At 8.15am George Clooney was riding his scooter on the state road 125 towards Olbia from Puntaldia.

“A car (a Mercedes E SW) did not respect the right of way and hit him. George Clooney fell and slammed the windshield of the Mercedes.

“The car driver called 112, the emergency number of Carabinieri.”

The star was taken by ambulance to the John Paul II hospital in Olbia, where Amal joined him.

An MRI scan showed that none of his bones had been fractured.

Hospital staff said he had sustained a minor knee injury in the incident.

He was later discharged but will require a course of physiotherapy to repair the damage.

Clooney plays US Air Force commander Scheisskopf in the Second World War drama, based on Joseph Heller’s satirical novel, which is set to air on Channel 4 next year.

The two-time Oscar winner has had a home on the Italian mainland, on Lake Como, for many years and has long had an affinity with Italy.

Hospital

He is a frequent visitor to the Venice Film Festival, and he and married Amal were married in the city in 2014.

Clooney has based himself in a villa in San Teodoro during filming. He was staying in a hotel for the night to be closer to the set.

Yesterday a representative for the star said: “George Clooney was treated and released from an Olbia hospital. He is recovering at his home and will be fine.”
