Get tough on inmates and use the money elsewhere

PRISON is, I always thought, primarily a punishment but yet again we are to be saddled with more taxpayers’ money being spent to cosset wrongdoers.

To stop the smuggling of drugs and other contraband into prisons, there should be a ban on all physical contact between visitors and inmates.

Visits should be behind security screens as in US jails. Technology should be used to prevent the use of drones over prisons.

The NHS, elderly welfare, national defence and many areas are crying out for cash, so why are we wasting money on offenders?
