Root regrets taking mic

- Gideon Brooks

JOE ROOT admitted he was “hammered” by England team-mates over his ‘mic-drop’ bat celebration after hitting the winning runs in the one-day series decider against India on Tuesday.

The England Test skipper marked his 13th ODI hundred with the extravagant display emulating the style of rappers or comedians dropping a microphone triumphantly at the end of a gig.

But afterwards Root conceded it was something which saw him ribbed mercilessly by the England dressing room.

“It was something that I immediately regretted,” he said. “I’ve not heard the end of it, it was literally the most embarrassing thing I’ve done on a cricket field.

“I don’t think it will be the last I hear of it from the group either – they’ve been hammering me.”

Root’s second consecutive one-day century not only took him past Marcus Trescothick to the top of England’s ODI century makers with 13, but also saw Eoin Morgan’s side to a 2-1 series victory. Now Root is hoping not only to take the same sort of form into the Test series but also that his red-ball outfit can replicate the work ethic and desire of Morgan’s white-ball set-up.

“One thing that’s been really good about this one-day group is the attitude this team has to learning and developing and moving forward,” said Root.

“That is something we are trying really hard to replicate within the Test team.”

Alastair Cook came back down to earth after his 180 for the England Lions against India A when bowled for five at New Road yesterday. India A finished day three of the four-day game on 11-3 in their second innings, trailing the Lions by 409 runs.

India have ruled out Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the first Test with a recurrence of a back injury.
