Johnson’s the man for Brexit say voters

- By David Maddox

BORIS Johnson is the best person to deliver Brexit and win an election for the Tories, say voters.

A YouGov poll made the ex-Foreign Secretary top choice to negotiate Brexit, with 34 per cent backing.

Just 16 per cent have confidence in Theresa May.

The survey also revealed Labour’s poll lead would go if Mr Johnson was leader.

The figures follow claims that Chancellor Philip Hammond – the “main Remainer” in the Cabinet – said he is delighted “bogeyman” Mr Johnson quit as Foreign Secretary along with Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Mr Hammond, accused of trying to water down Brexit, told friends that the “upside” of Mrs May’s much criticised soft Brexit plan is that “the two main bogeymen have been taken off the board”.

Disquiet

Mr Johnson and Mr Davis resigned because Mrs May had abandoned her red lines on Brexit, effectively tying Britain to EU rules and even leaving the door open to free movement of people.

In the YouGov poll, the public also strongly backed leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Mrs May’s Chequers’ plan received 11 per cent support, compared to 38 per cent backing a “no deal” Brexit.

Just 12 per cent said that the Chequers plan was good, while 43 per cent said it was bad.

There was evidence of growing disquiet with all political parties.

The survey showed 38 per cent would vote for a new party on the Right that was committed to Brexit – and 24 per cent would back an explicitly anti-immigrant, anti-Islam party.
