Cover your holiday needs

- By George Nichols

THE holiday season is here and it’s time to get away. Beaches, blue skies and somewhere that might even be warmer than it is at home. Once we’ve left these shores (or even if we’re among the waters, mountains and other beauty spots of the UK) we shouldn’t have a care in the world. And that shouldn’t just be the euphoria of that first glass of sangria, it should be because we’ve planned ahead.

Holiday insurance is something that’s easy to overlook yet is vitally important. So many things can happen when we’re away that just aren’t covered by any other insurance we have.

It’s not just losing things, or theft – falling ill or having a mishap can happen to anyone.

However, things can be more difficult if you already have a medical condition. Research shows that more than 35 per cent of the UK population suffer from a physical or mental condition which could cause huge problems if you’re far from home when something goes amiss and can also impact on holiday plans.

Finding holiday cover from specialist providers is one of those tasks you really don’t want to do at the best of times but if you suffer from a condition already you’ll find extra things that you have to take care of. Some companies may decline cover altogether, others might well add significant terms and exclusions – and others still may put you on the verge of a panic attack when you see the price you have to pay.

A survey of travellers aged between 44 and 65 showed that more than 56 per cent felt that having a medical condition impacted their choice of how and where they travel.

Those aged 60 and over were most conscious of their health affecting their plans. Of those who felt their health would affect things, more than a quarter worried about their mobility and if their accessibility needs would be catered for.

Others feared they might not get a good standard of medical treatment or that their condition would flare up. What companies are prepared to provide varies considerably. But
