Cottage move for Mawson

- Tony Banks

FULHAM are poised to complete a £25million deal for Alfie Mawson from Swansea.

The centre-back, below, is recovering from knee surgery he underwent at the end of last season, but that has not stopped the interest mounting in the England Under-21 defender, who has made a big impression since joining Swansea from Barnsley in 2016.

West Ham have had one bid for Mawson, 24, turned down while Burnley were in talks with Swansea this week.

The Cottagers, promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, have already secured the signing of German World Cup winner and former Chelsea striker Andre Schurrle on a two-year loan deal from Borussia Dortmund. Manager Slavisa Jokanovic has also signed midfielder Jean Michael Seri from Nice in a £25m deal, as well as full-back Maxime le Marchand from the same club, plus Spanish goalkeeper Fabri from Besiktas.

Midfielder Kevin McDonald has signed a new two-year deal with Fulham, with an option to stay for a further 12 months. “I feel settled here, it’s a great place to play,” said the Scot. WOLVES goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has retired after recovering from acute leukaemia.

The 32-year-old, right, announced last week he was in remission from the disease, but he has been advised by doctors to hang up his boots after 18 years at the club. Ikeme said: “My health is more important. It’s hard in a way but it’s a minimal price to pay to spend time with my family.”
