Peaty to the four as GB match best
ADAM PEATY struck his fourth gold of the tournament as Great Britain matched their best-ever European Championships medal haul in the pool.
Peaty led the men’s 4x100m individual relay team to victory in Glasgow.
That added to his earlier successes in the 50m and 100m breaststroke and 4x100m mixed medley.
Peaty now has 12 European titles to his name after Great Britain finished the swimming competition with nine golds. And Ben Proud claimed his first European gold in the men’s 50m freestyle.
When the women’s 4x100m medley team collected a bronze, Briton had equalled their Berlin 2014 medal tally of 24.
Peaty, Nicholas Pyle, James Guy and 200m freestyle champion Duncan Scott pipped Russia to the relay title. Peaty said: “The crowd got going and I knew I just had to hold my ground and get it back to these guys.”
Proud, who also won silver in the 50m butterfly, added: “I’m happy with that.”
Imogen Clark won silver, behind Russia’s Yulia Efimova in the women’s 50m breaststroke. There were also bronze medals for Guy, in the men’s 100m butterfly final and Holly Hibbott in the 400m freestyle.
“I was lifted by Proud’s gold – it leaves you all tingly,” said 19-yar-old Clark.
“I just wanted to go after I heard that roar for him. It’s absolutely mad, I can’t believe it.”
In the diving, Jack Laugher won the 3m springboard to add to his 1m springboard gold earlier in the week.
Matthew Dixon and Noah Williams took silver in the men’s synchronised 10m platform final.
