Should ALL children receive the same?

-

YES Says Virginia Blackburn Daily Express columnist

MINNIE Evans was absolutely right to divide her estate equally between her three children even if one of them is worth £55million.

The point about an inheritance is not just the money, welcome though that might be, but the sentiment behind it.

Parents who treat their children differently in their wills risk causing a hurt that may never go away – to say nothing of a rift between those self same siblings.

The author Daisy Goodwin has written at length about how devastated she was to be left out of her mother’s will. She accepted she needed the money less than her siblings but said that at heart she couldn’t help feeling rejected.

Most parents understand that in life – and in death – their children should be treated equally.

WHAT’S fair is fair…or is it? When it comes to family inheritance, equal shares may not always be right.

What a headache it must be to try to divvy up your assets in a way that causes the least amount of upset.

The easiest thing to do is to simply share the lot equally and have done with it.

But there are so many circumstances where one size doesn’t fit all.

For example, if your eldest got on the property ladder before the housing boom but your youngest is lumbered with thousands of pounds of student debt and struggling to even save for a deposit.

Trying to be fair in an unfair world is an impossible task.

But treating your children exactly the same isn’t always the fair thing to do.
