Owls prey on Black Cats
AFTER waiting almost 50 years for a victory on Wearside, Sheffield Wednesday secured their second in the space of four months to ease into the next round of the Carabao Cup.
Sunderland gradually ran out of attacking intent, and were taught a harsh lesson in failing to take their opportunities as they missed a chance to host Wolves.
With the draw for the second round staged prior to kick-off, the teams knew a visit by the Premier League new boys awaited the victors.
The visitors went in a goal up at the break, which was harsh on Jack Ross’s side, who made the majority of the running without converting any of the threats they created to Joe Wildsmith’s goal.
The Owls keeper proved the supply line at the other end after 29 minutes with a long clearance that was flicked on by former Sunderland forward Steven Fletcher. It should have provided a routine clearance for Alim Ozturk, but he LEAGUE ONE AFC Wimbledon were handed the chance of a London derby giant-killing when they were drawn against West Ham in the second round.
With only the Premier League clubs not in Europe entering at this stage, the Hammers will travel to a Wimbledon side who won 2-1 at Portsmouth in the first round.
There is one all-Premier League clash in a south-coast derby between Brighton and Southampton.
Swansea, relegated last season from the top flight, will meet Crystal Palace, while Nottingham Forest were drawn at home to Newcastle.
SUNDERLAND
allowed Marco Matias to easily bully him off the ball to prod home a shot from 12 yards.
Luke O’Nien should have levelled on the stroke of half-time, but the midfielder’s close-range shot was brilliantly blocked by Joost van Aken.
Frederik Nielsen was similarly alert after the break, heading clear a goalbound effort from distance by Black Cats skipper George Honeyman.
It left them open to the counter-punch, and Matias was denied a second when Jack Baldwin cleared his fiercely struck shot off the line.
Jon McLaughlin smothered from Adam Reach but the midfielder exacted revenge when glancing home the second goal from Barry Bannan’s cross with 12 minutes left, as Jos Luhukay’s side comfortably matched their league win here at the end of last season.
