Edmund gets Europe’s call
KYLE EDMUND has been picked by Bjorn Borg to play for Europe’s Laver Cup team next month.
The British No1 was yesterday named as the 16th seed for the final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, in New York next week.
And the Australian Open semi-finalist’s rising profile has earned him a place alongside Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic to play against the Rest of the World in the second edition of the Ryder Cup-style event in Chicago.
Edmund said: “This is an extraordinary opportunity and I can’t wait to join all these great players in Team Europe. It’s a huge honour.
“Tennis is such an individual sport so it’s always very special to have the chance to play as part of a team.” The first five team members qualified based on their postWimbledon world rankings, with team captains Borg and John McEnroe adding a wild card.
Borg said: “Kyle is an outstanding young player.”
Naomi Broady triumphed in the US Open qualifying battle of the Brits, beating Katie Boulter 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to move into the second round. electing not to compete at Ridgeway Country Club.
“The more you play alongside someone like Tiger, the more comfortable you are, the more it becomes the norm,” said Fleetwood, who was four shots ahead of Woods after the first two days at Augusta.
“If I was to be paired against Tiger at the Ryder Cup it can’t do any harm, for sure.”
Woods will know on September 4 whether he will play in Versailles or be a vice-captain. “I want to be picked,” he said.
