Wolves ‘scallywags’ are my kind of folk
WARRINGTON head coach Steve Price found out just what Wolves mean to the town when he stunned a fan by driving him to a game.
The Australian has transformed the side from no-hopers into potential double winners in his first season since replacing Tony Smith.
And he revealed how he furthered his connection with the club’s passionate fans by taking one to the recent home Super League match against Catalans. Price, who has steered Warrington into Saturday’s Challenge Cup final against the French club, said: “I picked up a supporter going to our last home game. It was a lad waiting for a bus, wearing all the Warrington gear and covered in tattoos.
“My daughter was a little nervous in the front passenger seat. She was like, ‘Don’t pick him up, he looks scary’, but he was a good fella and worked at the hospital.
“He was very positive about the club and the direction we’re heading. I then dropped him off at the King’s Head Tavern before the game and he went and had a couple of pints.
“I love Warrington and what the people stand for, and they have been very welcoming to me. They are good scallywag people who can throw their beer down and they are pretty direct, which I like. I had a working-class upbringing in Canterbury-Bankstown where my dad was a truck driver, so I can relate to Warrington folk.”
Warrington won the Challenge Cup three times in four seasons between 2009 and 2012 and Price added: “It would be fantastic to win this famous trophy in my first season in charge.”
Centre Bryson Goodwin was in the New Zealand team who beat England 20-18 in the semi-finals of the 2013 World Cup at Wembley thanks to a last-minute converted try from Shaun Johnson – and is looking forward to his return.
“It was one of the best games I’ve been involved in, especially because of the atmosphere with England playing. That was unbelievable,” said Goodwin.
“From what I hear, it’s an unbelievable weekend. The atmosphere the crowd created at the semi-finals was sensational – just imagine how good it will be.”
