Benitez makes case for defence

-

just seven minutes after Eden Hazard had broken the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 76th minute. But they kept the pressure on and were rewarded two minutes later.

Sarri admitted he was surprised by the defensive tactics adopted by Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, the man he replaced at Napoli. “We knew that it would be difficult because last season, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all lost here,” he added.

“It is not so easy to play against these opponents and today, maybe it was even more difficult.

“In Italy I have never seen Rafa play with five defenders and be so compact. We needed to move the ball very fast and be patient.”

Benitez, whose side have yet to win this term, defended his decision to play with five at the back.

“Depending on the car you have, you have to drive it a certain way,” he said.

“A long time ago, Barcelona had 80 per cent against 20 per cent and they lost the game. The stats are just for TV. Yesterday against Wolves, Manchester City had 71 per cent possession and didn’t win. You have to do what you have to do. That’s it.”

The Toon boss, who felt Chelsea’s penalty and the free-kick leading to the winner were harsh, added: “We worked so hard and were nearly there. So very close. But it is not about me and tactics, it is about players, the bigger picture.”
