My shock at having twins after 7 years of taking the Pill daily

- By Lucy Laing

AFTER taking the contraceptive pill for seven years, Tasha Smith was shocked to discover she was pregnant.

But the 24-year-old was hit with a second bombshell when she went for her first scan – she was expecting twins.

The optical consultant who lives with her partner, distribution supervisor Matthew Shriber, 26, said: “It didn’t enter my head I could be pregnant because I’d taken the Pill every day without fail, without missing a single one.

Heartbeats

“So when I found I was pregnant it was such a shock. Then when I went for a scan and they said it was twins I couldn’t believe it. It took weeks for it to sink in properly.”

Miss Smith, of Romsey, Hampshire, said on her first scan she thought the sonographer was joking when she said she could see two heartbeats.

She said: “She pointed out the heartbeats flickering on the screen. I could see there were two babies in there. I couldn’t believe it – neither could Matt.”

Miss Smith had to battle a dangerous liver condition called cholestasis when she was 29 weeks pregnant.

She went into labour two weeks later and gave birth to 3lb 10oz Austin and 3lb 12oz Tobias in March at the Princess Anne Hospital, Southampton. The twins are non-identical.

Miss Smith said: “They were so tiny lying there in their hospital incubators.

“They couldn’t breathe unaided at first and they couldn’t suck or swallow either as they had been born so early.”

The tiny twins were allowed home after four weeks and since then they have gone from strength to strength.

Miss Smith said: “They still do struggle a little with feeding, but they are starting to put weight on and they are doing really well.

“We are very proud of them. They do look slightly different, especially when they were born. But they are getting to look more similar as the weeks go on.

“They really are our little miracles. We still can’t believe that I managed to fall pregnant with twins while on the Pill. They were really meant to be.”
