Meghan is girl of 2018 for Tatler

Joyful snap that marks 21st year without Diana

ROYAL newcomer Meghan Markle has been named Girl of the Year by society magazine Tatler.

The 37-year-old follows in the footsteps of model Cara Delevingne and Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas, who have also won the honour. Awarding the title to an American is considered a break with tradition for the quintessentially British glossy journal.

Writer Rebecca Thorpe said the choice is a departure from the “toffs, mischief-makers and social media mavens” who have made it on to earlier lists.

She added: “Meghan Markle is none of the above, although she is worthy of the accolade.”

The former Suits actress married Harry in a fairy tale wedding at Windsor Castle in May.

Meghan will feature in the October edition of the magazine, which said she is popular with readers because of the “unmissable quality that makes her the one for whom heads turn”.

Just this week she wowed onlookers when she wore a stunning tuxedostyle dress to a charity performance of hip hop musical Hamilton, at London’s Victoria Palace Theatre. PRINCESS Diana’s close friend Rosa Monckton commemorated the 21st anniversary of her death yesterday by sharing a private photograph of her looking happy and relaxed. Mrs Monckton’s previously unseen snap shows Diana dressed casually as she lounges on a leather seat in what looks like a private jet. The businesswoman released the picture on Twitter alongside the caption: “Diana as I remember her.” She paid tribute to her daughter Domenica’s godmother, saying: “Not enough is written about her sense of fun and zest for life. Friend and wonderful godmother to Domenica. RIP.” Her photograph – in which Diana appears to be in her early 30s – wearing a white sweatshirt and blue jogging bottoms, was received with delight by royal fans yesterday. Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond tweeted: “When people ask about my memories of Diana, I always think of her throwing her head back and laughing joyously.” Rosa Monckton, inset, paid tribute to Diana with photo
