Murders suspect held in police chase after pepper spray drama

- By John Twomey

THE prime suspect for the knife murders of a mother and daughter was pepper sprayed and arrested after allegedly running from police, it was revealed yesterday.

Janbaz Tarin, 21, was chased by officers down an alley on Thursday night. Moments later, he emerged from the alley and dashed down a road. He then allegedly leapt on a car and tried to scale a wall.

But Tarin was surrounded and slumped on the bonnet of the car, shielding his eyes from pepper spray and the glare of torches, before being ordered to lie down while he was handcuffed.

The drama in Sparkhill, Birmingham, was filmed by witnesses. At one stage, Tarin is heard groaning and pleading: “Please, please, please give me water.”

One witness said: “He was moaning a lot when they cuffed him and he writhed around a bit.

“Eventually, he calmed down after they washed his eyes out and he came in quietly.”

Tarin was the target of a manhunt after he was named as the suspect in the murders of his former girlfriend Raneem Oudeh, 22, and her Saleem, 49.

The women bled to death in the street in Solihull after they were stabbed in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.

Police were alerted when Tarin turned up at a flat close to where he was arrested. Around a dozen officers raced to the scene.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield said: “The response to our appeals has been excellent and tonight resulted in this arrest.”

One neighbour said: “It was pretty dramatic. He tried to leg it mother Khaola Victims... Raneem Oudeh, far left, and mother Khaola Saleem were stabbed in Solihull on Monday, sparking a police hunt which has now ended on foot after jumping over a car, but the cops were too fast.

“They pepper sprayed him and were pouring water into his eyes.”

Another said: “He was screaming ‘water’ and I realised he had been pepper sprayed.”

Bilal Khan, 29, a delivery driver, said: “I don’t think he was at the flat long. He had obviously gone in and been sent out again as he looked a bit displeased.”

Tarin, an Afghan national living legally in Britain, worked as a cashier in a convenience store in Birmingham.
