Prosecutor Robert Evans said: “The method the robbers use is this: they start off in another car, when they see a car they want to steal they pull up behind it.

“One gets out of the car and goes to the window of the driver’s door of the car they are going to steal. They get that driver to open the window and then squirt ammonia into the face of the driver. The robbers then order the driver and any passengers to get out, before driving away in their car, closely followed by an accomplice in the car they arrived in,” Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

Describing the alleged robbery involving Mr Watson, Mr Evans told the jury: “This offence happened shortly before 5pm. Lennard Ballack and Michael Watson were in their VW Golf.

“The Golf was bumped from behind so Mr Ballack pulled over to see what the damage was. While he was out of the car he was approached.

“A witness described seeing the attacker squirting a clear liquid into the driver’s face. She realised it wasn’t water by the driver’s reaction – his screams of pain.

“They continued to attack him on the ground. The attacker jumped into the driver side and drove off. Someone was hanging out of the passenger door. That passenger was Michael Watson. He had cuts and abrasions to his face and back.”

The trial continues.
