It’s Wigan and glory for Williams

- Ross Heppenstall

ENGLAND playmaker George Williams has fixed his sights firmly on Grand Final glory after reiterating his commitment to Wigan.

The homegrown stand-off was back to his best on Friday as the Warriors crushed sworn enemies St Helens 30-10 on their own turf.

The result denied Saints the League Leaders’ Shield – for the time being at least – and suggested second-placed Wigan have the look of champions. Williams said: “It was a fantastic result. I’m Wigan born and bred, so I was brought up to dislike St Helens.

“We were on a mission to stop them winning the League Leaders’ Shield and we did that.

“It gives us confidence we can beat the top sides and that’s three wins out of three now in the Super 8s.

“If we do meet St Helens again further down the line, in the play-offs or even the Grand Final, then they will be wanting to pay us back. But there’s a real buzz about our team right now and everyone was quite emotional after the game.

“When I won the Grand Final in 2016, it was the best day of my life. To do it again would be unbelievable.”

Williams has come on the radar of a number of leading NRL clubs but he remains committed to his hometown club.

The 23-year-old said: “I’m definitely at Wigan next season – I’ve got three years left on my contract and I’m enjoying it here. I need to be loyal and repay the club for what they have done for me since the age of 12.”

Meanwhile, Wigan centre Dan Sarginson is mourning the sudden death of his brother Adam, 23, over the weekend.

Executive director Kris Radlinski said: “Our thoughts are with Dan and his family at this extremely sad time.

“The club will be giving Dan both time and support while respecting his and his family’s privacy.”
